Doctor Europaeus

Contenuto

The Doctor Europaeus label is an additional certification to the PhD degree (Dottore di Ricerca) issued at a national level. It is not a supra-national academic degree, nor is it a title conferred by international institutions. This certification is issued in accordance with the European Convention regarding the “Doctor Europaeus” label, as adopted by the European University Association (EUA).

The University may grant the additional Doctor Europaeus label upon request by the PhD candidate, subject to the approval of the Academic Board, provided that the following four conditions are met:

  • The PhD thesis must be the overall result of a period of work and research of at least 6 months at a host organization in a European country (eligible organization types can be viewed here);"
  • A positive review of the thesis work must be granted by at least two reviewers appointed by the Academic Board. These reviewers must belong to foreign university institutions from two different European countries (excluding Italy and the host organization where the research was conducted).
  • At least one member of the final examination committee (either a regular member or an expert) must belong to a foreign European university institution.
  • The thesis defense must be conducted in English or in another official language of the European Union other than Italian.

PhD students interested in obtaining the Doctor Europaeus certification must submit an application to the Course Coordinator before the end of their third year using the dedicated form.

The Coordinator will verify that all conditions have been met, and the Academic Board will subsequently deliberate to approve or deny the request.
